Dr. Hildebrandt received his M.D. degree from Heidelberg University, Heidelberg, Germany. He completed a residency in Pediatrics at Marburg University Children's Hospital, Marburg, Germany, and a postdoctoral research fellowship in Internal Medicine and Nephrology at Yale University School of Medicine, New Haven, Connecticut. He has been a Professor of Pediatrics and of Human Genetics and the Frederick G. L. Huetwell Professor for the Cure and Prevention of Birth Defects at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan, since 2001.
He is the recipient of numerous grants. His current research focuses on positional cloning of genes causing kidney diseases, such as cystic kidney diseases, nephronophthisis, urinary tract malformations, nephrotic syndrome, and Bartter syndrome. He also studies the molecular genetics and functional aspects of developmental defects of the kidney, eye and auditory systems and has generated animal models for genetic kidney diseases for novel genes that have been identified.
